Meditating is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. The benefits are endless and research shows that it helps with the following, which are just a few examples:
I don’t think I can meditate because I can’t switch off my mind
This is a sentence I hear a lot. We have about 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day, so when the mind feels busy it’s because it is. When you meditate the mind doesn’t just suddenly switch off altogether, sounds and thoughts will come and go all the way through. Invite them to be a part of your practice instead of thinking of them as an annoyance and allow them to act as a reminder, in order to bring your awareness and focus back to your breath. When you meditate you train your mind to keep bringing it back to one focus, whether that’s your breath, a mantra or a colour for example.
I don’t have time to meditate
When people tell me they don’t have time to meditate my immediate thought is “I don’t have time not to meditate”. By taking even 5 minutes at the beginning of the day to connect with your breath and tap into the peace within, it can help you be less stressed and less reactive during the day. It can help get the creativity flowing and make you feel more focused. It simply creates clarity in the mind.
